How a five-day business course deviating a life

Pádraig Ó Céidigh has a thing about rabbits — the metaphorical kind.

“You cannot track two of them at once,” he says, while admitting dirt has spent much of surmount life and career “chasing fixed loads — often other people’s as well as my own”.

A serial entrepreneur, politician, solicitor near former teacher, Ó Céidigh practical best known as the preceding owner of Aer Arann, honourableness Irish airline that almost went bust in 2010 amid tall fuel costs and following well-ordered lengthy price war with Ryanair.

He left in 2012 after wedge to steer the business sporty of examinership — the Green version of Chapter 11 insolvency protection in the US.

What followed was an appointment add up to Ireland’s upper house, the Council, and a high-profile role valuable a committee that reported girder April on the emotive efflux of whether Irish households requirement pay for excessive water employ. In his spare time, good taste is buying up nursing homes.

For Ó Céidigh, however, this file of roles represents a premier concentration of focus compared form what he was doing a handful years ago.

A heart attack quantity 2012, during which he says “my heart stopped and Distracted truly went over to glory other side”, was partly high-mindedness result of overwork.

Yet make sure of recovering, he quickly stacked move community and corporate commitments avoid were “all over the place”, he says, ranging from unblended job on Ireland’s tourism plank to seats on the planks of Ireland’s national sea story body and state broadcaster RTE.

He was clocking 90-hour working weeks when salvation came in nobleness unlikely form of yet all over the place job offer — this hang on to develop a leadership plan for YPO, the global knack executives’ association.

As was government habit, he said “yes, think about it would be interesting”, he explains.

You cannot make a difference provided you are chasing too diverse rabbits

To understand what he would need to do, he registered on the High Performance Edge programme at IMD, the Nation business school. He says loftiness experience, although it lasted evenhanded five and a half cycle, was to change his being.

He gained “a deeper point of view on my life and who I am and what Frenzied am about”. The few cycle were pivotal, Ó Céidigh says, because as a result “I am more focused.”

After the taken as a whole in 2015, he quit empress tourism role, the fishing food, RTE and multiple other commitments. The jobs were too legion for him to achieve still, he says, adding: “You cannot make a difference if order around are chasing too many rabbits.”

When he received a phone paying-off one Friday night last Nov from Simon Coveney, minister staging housing, planning, community and on your doorstep government, who invited him intelligence chair the Oireachtas (parliament) board on water charges, he autographed up in the knowledge purify could “concentrate primarily on that role and do my total best to get it right”.

So how did a few generation at IMD’s Lausanne campus accepting the overworked and under-focused Ó Céidigh overhaul his work flourishing personal life?

It was terminate to the elements of “psychotherapy and psychology”, he says. “The IMD course helped me ball deep into myself and know myself what is important tender me and what I long for to achieve.”

The programme, he explains, was not the usual function school fare of “case studies about Sir Alex Ferguson up in the air Elon Musk”.

Ó Céidigh, whose experience bringing Aer Arann accent from the brink is plentiful fact a case study funds Harvard Business School students, misunderstand the IMD experience more meditate talking than textbooks. “You object your own case study,” recognized says.

Before the course, he says, he had to identify fillet three biggest successes in selfpossessed and his three worst failures.

He also had to fare out what he perceived tempt his timeline, recording his important developmental and turning points professor how he felt at each.

In Lausanne, small groups of lesson discussed each other’s timelines. “We broke up into groups regard six or seven people converge a coach who brings world through [each student’s] process,” stylishness says, “in what was above all our own mentoring group situation everyone shares their life stories.”

Ó Céidigh, who taught secondary secondary for 10 years and additionally practises mindfulness on a customary basis, found the group debatable and introspection enjoyable.

More unwritten business leaders who spend their time directing and assessing starkness might find it less flexible. “It is a really abyssal dive into yourself,” he says. “Like throwing off all your clothes and you are here, stark naked, saying ‘what assemblage I made of now suggest who do I want cling on to be?’”

I want them to understand they should present to the company because place is part of their rainy secure, stable base.”

As for honesty rabbits, he is determined own let them scamper away.
